Ball State University: Intercollegiate Athletics Director of Athletics

Ball State University, located in Muncie, IN, invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of Athletics.

The Director reports to the President of the University and is a member of the President’s Cabinet. The Director provides strategic leadership, direction, and oversight for a 19-sport NCAA Division I FBS intercollegiate athletics program.

The Director of Athletics is responsible for fiscal affairs, personnel, strategic planning, facilities, public relations and general operations; and, works closely with multiple internal and external constituencies to advance the University’s strategic objectives and goals.


Ball State University was founded in 1918 and is located in Muncie, Indiana, 55 miles northeast of Indianapolis. At more than 22,500 students, enrollment for the 2017–18 academic year is Ball State’s largest ever. Students come from all Indiana counties, all 50 states and 68 countries. Ball State’s seven academic colleges offer 190 undergraduate majors, 130 undergraduate minors, 140 graduate programs, and 200 study abroad programs.

The Ball State Cardinals compete in NCAA Division I FBS athletics in seven men’s and twelve women’s sports, participating in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). The university has 505 student-athletes and ranks near the top nationally in the NCAA’s Graduation Rates Report and Academic Progress Rate.


The Director of Athletics has direct responsibility for the University’s NCAA Division I FBS Intercollegiate Athletics program. The Director supervises a full and part-time staff of approximately 100 people and manages an annual budget of $25 million. The Director also provides leadership and represents Ball State in its responsibilities as a NCAA Division I participant and a member of the Mid-American Conference. The position reports directly to the President and is a member of the President’s Cabinet.

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Five (5) years of successful management experience with evidence of increased responsibility in intercollegiate athletics or a related field; high degree of knowledge of NCAA Division I athletics programs and what is required to achieve success at that level; evidence of effective leadership and the ability to manage and motivate others; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to compliance with NCAA and Title IX regulations; evidence of strong communication skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external constituents; demonstrated success and mastery in managing a sizable budget; Evidence of successfully generating revenues for a complex organization; commitment to and experience in raising private support from donors and from corporations; established record of achievement in the areas of marketing and promotions; successful record of long-range financial planning in a complex organization; and, a successful record of and commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion; possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.
