Army West Point invites nominations and applications for the position of Head Women’s Basketball Coach.
ABOUT ARMY WEST POINT:
USMA is renowned as the world’s preeminent leadership development institution. Located on the banks of the Hudson River in West Point, NY, it is approximately one hour from New York City. The mission of USMA is “to build, educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets to be commissioned leaders of character committed to the Army Values and ready for a lifetime of service to the Army and Nation.” This position will be housed within the AWPAA, which is a non-profit corporation organized to manage and support the 30 intercollegiate athletic programs at the Academy. The AWPAA mission is to recruit, educate, train and inspire leaders of character who are committed to the Army Values through an extraordinary NCAA Division I athletic experience.
Position Description:
The Head Coach is responsible for creating and maintaining a successful Women’s Basketball program. The Head Coach is responsible for the overall operation of a Women’s Basketball team that competes in the Patriot League, including hiring and managing a staff of assistant coaches as well as evaluating, recruiting, training and coaching Cadet-athletes to compete successfully against intercollegiate-level competition. This position reports directly to the assigned Sport Administrator, keeping them apprised of all planning, organizing, staffing and development of the Army West Point Women’s Basketball program. This is a professional coaching position, and all duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of the United States Military Academy (“USMA”), Army West Point Athletics Association Inc. (“AWPAA”), the Patriot League and the NCAA.
The Head Coach acts as an extension of the Director of Athletics and has direct access to the Cadet-athletes. The Head Coach must possess highly professional mannerisms, unimpeachable moral and ethical character, and be a role model.
Essential Functions:
40% Coaching
- Promotes the philosophy and objectives of AWPAA; to include adhering to and enforcing all applicable policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of USMA, the Conference, and the NCAA.
- Responsible for the ongoing teaching, mentoring and instruction of Cadet-athletes in the performance of Women’s Basketball such as, but not limited to, games, practices, individual and team workouts and conditioning sessions.
- Provides leadership and instruction on personal and athletic development of Cadet-athletes to include counseling team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters when appropriate.
- Schedules and conducts regular practice sessions in and out of season, as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations. Develops and implements strategies for motivating Cadet-athletes to perform at maximum levels as both individuals and as a team.
- Develops a competitive event schedule, in conjunction with the Sport Administrator.
- Develops and oversees the execution of a team budget, in conjunction with the Sport Administrator and AWPAA Chief Financial Officer.
- Ensures that team travel arrangements comply with USMA, AWPAA, Patriot League and NCAA rules and regulations, to include monitoring development of travel itineraries, coordination of travel plans, and limiting the number of missed classes due to travel.
- Collaborates conditioning and training of team members in conjunction with assigned Strength and Conditioning Coach and assigned Athletic Trainer to ensure the Cadet-athletes are physically prepared for competition.
- Supervises assigned assistant coaches and other support staff to ensure compliance to applicable rules, policies and procedures; provides orientation, training and guidance as needed; conducts performance evaluations.
35% Recruiting
- Oversees recruiting and selection of Cadet-athletes; ensures compliance with AWPAA policies and NCAA recruiting rules and regulations; initiates process for determining academic eligibility.
- Recruit quality prospective Cadet-athletes and ensure timely submission of their academic records for admissions.
10% Academics
- Provide an overall positive educational environment for Cadet-athletes conducive to learning, athletic development, social growth, and preparing them for life beyond college.
- Supervise, in conjunction with the athletic tutoring and advising program, the total academic progress of the team implementing corrective action plans through appropriate staff.
5% Administrative
- Work to integrate sports into the whole spectrum of USMA life to complement the AWPAA and USMA missions in the military community.
- Manages the Women’s Basketball program within the framework of a balanced budget.
- Oversees selection, purchase, fitting and maintenance of team equipment, to include uniforms, athletic equipment and supplies.
- Ensures safety of Cadet-athletes and coaching staff through careful monitoring of the condition of athletics equipment and facilities utilized by designated sport; submits requests for repair, maintenance, and improvement of facilities to facility manager when appropriate.

5% Engagement
- Assists with approved fundraising activities as requested.
- Cooperates with all coaches within AWPAA to enhance overall AWPAA operations.
- Participates in public relations activities to include speaking engagements, television and radio interviews and press conferences as approved or requested.
- Represents AWPAA at professional, civic, charitable and alumni events.
- Conducts camps and clinics to further engagement and recruiting goals in conjunction with the AWPAA Camps Office.
- Assist with departmental needs as requested. When practical under the circumstances, staff is encouraged to voluntarily attend athletic events to support Army West Point teams.
5% Other Duties as Assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities:
The Head Coach will oversee five Assistant Coaches.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Five years’ collegiate basketball coaching experience.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interact effectively and professionally with coaches, administrators, Cadet-athletes, prospective Cadet-athletes, parents, etc.
- Takes initiative, hardworking, ability/willingness to figure out solutions to problems independently, creative.
- Extremely organized, detail oriented, self-starter and intrinsically motivated.
- Strong management and leadership skills; Proven ability to multi-task effectively.
- Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines.
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
- Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
