Lenoir-Rhyne University, located in Hickory, North Carolina is seeking a values-driven leader to fill the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Founded in 1891, Lenoir-Rhyne University is a co-educational, private liberal arts institution with 50+ undergraduate degree programs and 20+ graduate degree programs. LR enrolls nearly 2,300 undergraduate and graduate students. LR works to develop the whole person, to liberate mind and spirit, clarify personal faith, foster physical wholeness, build a sense of community and promote responsible leadership for service to the world. LR’s main campus is in Hickory, North Carolina, where both undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered. The university also offers graduate degree programs on our campuses in Asheville, North Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina. Our Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary is also in Columbia. LR is affiliated with the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and welcomes students from all religious backgrounds.

Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics (the Bears) sponsors 23 Division II varsity programs that compete in the South Atlantic Conference. Central to the mission of Bears Athletics is ensuring an exemplary student-athlete experience driven by the core values of Balance, Excellence, Accountability, Respect and Service. LR Athletics focuses on bettering student-athletes with an approach called “The 3Ds:” Develop Champions For Life, Drive Competitive Excellence, and Dedicate The Effort For Success.

Lenoir-Rhyne has become one of the preeminent DII universities in the country, consistently finishing in the top 25 of the Division II Learfield Cup. In addition to success in developing winning programs, LR teams have achieved national and regional recognition in academic excellence and in community service. The average GPA of LR student athletes is 3.40 and every athletic team has achieved a 3.0 GPA.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics is responsible for all facets of the Athletics program, including the selection and evaluation of personnel, budget control, conference representation and meeting the overall needs of the student-athletes and staff.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizes, plans and implements all athletic cost centers.
  • Coordinates game contracts and schedules.
  • Oversees departmental policies and strategic planning.
  • Supervises selection, training, retention, and evaluation of all department personnel.
  • Serves on the President’s Cabinet.
  • Represents the department at all conference and national meetings.
  • Disseminates NCAA and SAC rules and regulations.
  • Coordinates with the College President and the Faculty Athletics Representative all NCAA and SAC matters pertaining to legislation and implementation of new programs.
  • Serves as public spokesperson for athletics.
  • Lead with strong values that align with those of the University and demonstrate unwavering integrity.
  • Have a deep appreciation for Lenoir-Rhyne’s history and inclusive culture.
  • Work collaboratively with other campus leaders and contribute to the life of the University beyond their role as a traditional AD.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a Master’s Degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience in senior level college athletics administration and/or similar type of leadership role in relevant field.

  • Creatively connect and collaborate with, then inspire and motivate, a wide range of stakeholders such as student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff, University faculty and staff, donors, alumni, fans, and external partners.
  • Serve as a competitive, confident, inspiring, motivated, and experienced leader who has hired, mentored, managed, empowered, and held people accountable.
  • Develop and cultivate strong national relationships in intercollegiate athletics and higher education.
  • Support competitive athletics while prioritizing student-athlete health, safety, academic, and holistic success.
  • Embrace the inclusive nature of Lenoir-Rhyne University and embrace the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Understand the challenges faced by a small, private, liberal arts Division II athletics program and experience dealing with the issues that define college athletics today (e.g., NIL, pay for play, transfer portal, NCAA transformation, mental health & safety, conference realignment, legal challenges, etc.).
  • Demonstrate the ability to seek and secure additional sources of external support to enhance athletic scholarships, implement facility improvements, and enhance the student athlete experience.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the success of all student-athletes with demonstrated experience supporting all sports and providing every student-athlete with a championship experience.
  • Serve as a respected representative of the University and is comfortable dealing with the local media and the public aspects required of the position.
  • Understand and work within the funding and budget guidelines set by the University.
  • Bring experience in revenue generating initiatives (marketing, sales, promotion, and event management sponsorships, media rights, affinity partnerships, branding, etc.).
  • Have comfort and experience working with a staff size and department budget that is similar to that of Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics.
  • Lead the discussion nationally and within the South Atlantic Conference when it comes to policy development.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of emotional intelligence and the ability to connect with the Lenoir-Rhyne community, which includes both internal and external constituents. Cultivate an innate ability to develop relationships, communicate effectively, listen to what others say, and react in a balanced way that inspires confidence in their leadership.
  • Balance a passion for competition and a desire to win championships in all sports programs with the ability to achieve excellence in the classroom and in community service.
